Springfield... but not the one you're thinking of!

Although we were angry that we were charged $0.50/each to come back into the U.S. from Canada (@ Niagara Falls), we cleared Customs no problem! Sounds like no big deal; surprisingly though, we saw quite a few people having trouble regaining access. I'll be honest, leaving the U.S. did seem overly simplistic. We came up to a sign telling us we had arrived at the "Entry to Canada" - a single turnstile with a fence topped with barbed wire. We walked through the turnstile unsupervised and unnoticed and headed to Canada! Upon our return, though, we learned that a few people just ahead of us had walked through to Canada without their passports or ANY identification to return. We speculate that one girl had lost her passport, as she was nearly hysterical just outside Customs. Thankfully, though, we were able to return to the NY side with no problem & in about 5 minutes... with our passports (with fresh Canadian stamps!) in tow. We've been driving now for about 5.5 hours, and just passed through Springfield, MA on the Massachusetts Turnpike. We've already paid about $40 in tolls and learned 2 words interchangeable with "interstate" - thruway & turnpike. We suspect they're just fancy names so they can justify charging us so much to drive on them. We're staying about a half hour north of Boston tonight, and tomorrow we'll take the train into the city for the majority of the day before heading off towards Maine. Stay tuned!
